Wired Freedom Ebike Review

Sup dudes Matt here, and this is my Wired Freedom review in text form – just in case the video wasn’t for you…

Long story short, the Wired Freedom is one of the fastest most powerful ebikes on the market that has a reasonable price tag and quality components.

Some of the best things about the Wired Freedom ebike are:

Pros of the Wired Freedom

  • It runs on 60 volts. Most ebikes run on 48 volts. The more the voltage, the more the top end speed and also typically, more volts = more power. Ultimately Power = Volts x Amps (P=V*I) so you need both amps and current, but higher voltage usually results in more top speed, and also LESS heat because Amps is what creates heat (not so much volts) which leads me into the second main selling point of the Wired Freedom ebike…
  • It has a 45 amp controller, which is insane. The older version of the Wired Freedom had a 60 volt 40 amp controller, which was already crazy, but the latest version dials it up even more. A 60 volt battery charged to max is actually 67 volts at 100%, so we can deduce a peak power output estimate based on 67 volts * 45 amps = 3015 watts roughly. Although the “45 amp” controller may actually be pulling slighly more that 45 amps because in my review ride I saw the Wired Freedom top out at around 3400 watts of peak power. “45 amps” is just a rating, and from what my “body dyno” felt, 3400 watts feels accurate.
  • Top speed is north of 40 mph when unlocked. This is rare for an ebike, and while I don’t recommend or encourage riding this fast, it’s good to have when you need it if you get on a busy street and keeping up with traffic is more safe than getting ran over because you’re too slow. Also, it is a thrill 😜. 40 mph in a car may feel slow, as does 500 mph in an airplane. The feeling of speed is relative to the vehicle you’re on. Rest assured, 40 mph on a 100 lbs ebike feels very fast, and it is.
  • It has a nicely specced full suspension setup. The DNM rear shock on the 4 bar linkage is excellent for the price of this ebike, and the RST Guide fork up front is also very nice for the price. Of course you can find better suspension on ebikes, but this is a very nice riding and adjustable suspension.
  • It’s got dual batteries. Whenever you’re talking about running this kind of power, range and battery capacity are of concern. Both batteries are obviously 60v, the frame integrated battery is 20ah, and the rear rack battery is 15ah. The weight of each is, to my surprise, the exact same as I discovered in my review video. The nice part about dual batteries as opposed to one single large battery is you don’t need to bring both batteries if you are going on a short trip and want to keep the weight down. However, for long trips, bring both batteries for BIG range. 2100 watt-hours is the total energy capacity between the two 60v battery packs, which is a pretty serious number considering the typical ebike offers between 600-900 watt-hours.
  • Riding position is a big pro for me. I love the upright riding geometry with the exaggerated BMX style riser bars. This keeps weight off of your arms, and your head in a level position as opposed to some other bikes that lean you forward and cause you to crane your neck up and support your upper body weight on your arms.

The Cons of the Wired Freedom

Here are some of the potential downsides of the Wired Freedom

  • The supposed “Death Wobble” – there has been rumor of the Wired Freedom having a loose rear triangle and/or headset that causes instability while riding this ebike, however, from what I have observed and experience out of the 3 Wired Freedom ebikes I’ve owned in the last 2 years, this does not exist on the bikes I have received and reviewed. The frames of the bikes I’ve owned feel solid and stable and I have rode them all over 40 mph.
  • Legality. This ebikes ships as a class 2, but when you unlock it to achieve the power and speeds mentioned, this is technically beyond what is legal to ride in public locations. Therefore you should only use the true performance of this bike where legal.
  • It’s a pretty large ebike… which can be a pro or con depending on your size. I’m 6’5″ and it is fantastic for me, but this is not a great fit size-wise for short riders. They do offer a step thru frame option that makes it more manageable for those who don’t prefer the high step frame.
  • It’s probably not a good choice for your first ebike if you don’t have motorcycle or high power ebike experience. This thing is on another level compared to a typical ebike, and you should treat it with caution and ride it as though it is a motorcycle. Beware of “whiskey throttle”. Unlike a gas engine, the motor is active and ready to send power in complete silence. Careful not to accidentally twist the throttle and give it the JUICE. This ebike, as well as any ebike is prone to accidental power inputs, and this one REALLY sends it.

In short, the Wired Freedom ebike is one of the most bad to the bone electric bikes on the market, especially considering the price. There’s tons of “so-so” ebikes on the market being sold around this price and even more. If you want something exceptionally powerful and a great bang-for-the-buck, there’s really not much else out there that can compete with the Wired Freedom. I’ll leave you with three final words. Buy it now.
