Velotric Discover 2 Review

Sup dudes, Matt here, and this is my concise Velotric Discover 2 review in text format in case you didn’t want to watch my Velotric Discover 2 review video on YouTube.

Long story short, the Velotric Discover 2 is an ebike that offers a refined and nimble riding experience at a fair price.

PROS

  • The torque sensor is excellent, it gives you power based on how hard you press on the pedals. This offers an intuitive riding experience and opposed to a cadence sensor ebike. Interestingly, Velotric updated the Discover 2 so you can actually choose whether you want to use the torque sensor or switch to cadence sensor.
  • There is a throttle, which will power the bike all the way to top speed of…. I forget, it shows in my video though, around 30 MPH. You have to unlock it to achieve this speed, but it’s super simple to unlock the top speed. If you want to play it safe and maximize range keep it locked to factory setting and keep your speed 20 MPH or less to avoid trouble with the law or battery range.
  • UL Listed battery – it’s a fire safety thing, and Velotric is actually UL certified, unlike many ebike companies that simply slap a UL Listed badge on their website trying to dupe the customer.
  • IPX7 rated battery and highly water resistant ebike. You can actually throw the battery in water and it’ll still work (which I did in my Velotric Discover 2 ebike review on YouTube).
  • Beautiful 3.5″ TFT color display
  • Apple Find My connective which gives you some hope of recover in the case of theft, or if you somehow forgot where you left your ebike 🤪
  • 2 frame sizes offered
  • App is optional, I hate when apps are forced onto the rider. The app is good, but you don’t have to mess with it at all if you just wanna ride.

CONS:

  • Hill climbing power is not this ebikes strong suit. It can definitely do hills, but think of this ebike as a bicycle with motor assistance. The power is rated for around 750W nominal, which is nice, but there are definitely stronger and more logical choices if frequent steep hills and human minimal effort is your goal.
  • Range to some degree is a downside, depending on your range needs. Ultimately you really don’t want a “long range ebike” unless you need the range for your regular rides because long range means BIG weight usually. In order to truly get 60-100 miles of range (while going fast) you need a battery 3-4 times the size of what’s in the Velotric Discover 2. The beauty of the Velotric Discover 2 battery size is it keeps the ebikes weight down and makes it more nimble and manageable, while also making human powered input much more meaningful. 40 miles of range while having a lot of fun with liberal throttle is very realistic.

Neutrals

The bottom line is, this is a great commuter / fitness ebike with a responsive and refined torque sensor that’s offering a ton of value for and electric bicycle under $2000. I’d recommend this one.
